MOSES: THE MUSICAL.

Scene 1:  Don’t Forget Who You Are | 🎭Father / Mother / Young Moses / Miriam / Aaron

(Moses’ family is at home. Parents watch their three children—Miriam, Aaron, and Moses—at play. Though everything seems happy, a sad look lingers in the parents’ eyes.)

Father:  (Walks up to the children, gathers them in his arms, and brings them to Mother)

Children, come here. We have something important to tell you.

(The family sits together in the center of the stage. Mother and Father are in the middle, the older children at their sides, and baby Moses on Mother’s lap.)

Mother:    Children, listen carefully. You know how God brought our baby brother back to us. The princess found him in the river, and I was asked to take care of him until he grew a little older. Now, that time has come. (Holds her young son's hands and kneels down to look into his eyes)

My sweet boy, you are growing up. You are ready now. You must go live in the palace with the Pharaoh’s daughter, who will be your new mother.

Young Moses:    No! Mommy, I don’t want to go!

Miriam:    Oh, my little brother!  (Hugs Moses tightly to protect him)

Aaron:    Does he really have to leave us, Father?

Father:    I am so sorry, son.  (Hugs Aaron, who is crying)

Mother: (Swallows her tears and speaks bravely)

We knew this day would come, but God will protect him. (Regains her composure and speaks with firm love)

Moses, you must always take good care of yourself. Be wise in what you say and how you act.

Young Moses:    Mommy!

Mother:    You are a miracle child, I know you will do wonderful things. But keep this deep inside your heart: Never forget who you are. You are a child of Israel.

(Mother holds the boy’s hand and begins to sing. Miriam reaches out to him as Father gently leads Miriam and Aaron offstage. Mother walks with Young Moses toward the palace as she sings.)

Scene 2:  At the Palace | 🎭 Princess / Royal Courtiers (4) / Boy Moses / Mother / Slaves 1,2,3,4,5 / Egyptian Singers

(Princess, Royal Official, Mother, Young Moses, and Egyptian Singers)

(The Princess sits on her throne. Mother kneels before her while Young Moses stands quietly, looking around in wonder. The Princess approaches the boy and smiles.)

Princess:  What a handsome boy you are! You will be my son. I will name you Moses, because I pulled you out of the water.

(Egyptian Singers step forward to sing as the Princess dresses Young Moses in royal Egyptian robes provided by the Official.)

Princess:   (Holding Moses’ hand) You are my son now, Moses. I will make you a great prince of Egypt, and you will make me proud. 

Young Moses:   Yes, Mother... I will be a good son, and make you proud. 

Princess:    Come along. Today you begin your lessons in our language, math, art, history, and military training. 

(The Egyptian court bows as the Princess leads Young Moses offstage.)

Scene 3:  The Royal Lessons | 🎭Drummers (11)  / Moses / Princess / Royal Official 

(Youth Moses, Royal Official, Princess)

(Stage setup: Drums are placed for the performance.)

Official:   This way, Prince Moses. It is time for your martial arts.

(Youth Moses enters, followed by the Princess.)

Princess:  (Sitting down)  Moses! Show me what you have learned.

Official:   (Hands the drumsticks to Moses)

(Moses takes a warrior stance and performs a powerful drum routine.)

Princess:    Wonderful, Moses! You make me so proud to call you my son.

Youth Moses:    Thank you, Mother. I am honored.

Princess:    You have worked hard today. Return to your room and rest.

Youth Moses:    Yes, Mother.

(Exits with the Official)

Scene 4:  Moses’ Bedchamber | 🎭Father, Mother, Young Moses, Miriam, Aaron (in memory/song), Youth Moses, Adult Moses, Servants 

(Youth Moses, Adult Moses, Official, Princess)

(Servants help Youth Moses prepare for bed. Once he is under the blanket, the servants bow and leave.)

Scene 5: The Worksite and the Escape | 🎭Adult Moses, Slave Driver 1, Slave Driver 2, Slave, Pharaoh, Royal Courtiers / Official (4), Guards 

(Adult Moses, Slaves, Slave Drivers, Official, Pharaoh)

(Adult Moses wakes up, humming the song quietly to himself.)

Adult Moses:

I miss my original family so much... I want to see how my people are doing, even if it's just from far away. I’m going to go look for them.

(Music plays. Slaves slowly push heavy stage props, representing hard labor, under the harsh watch of the Slave Drivers.)

Slave Driver 1:  Faster! Work harder!  (Cracks whip)

Slave Driver 2:  No stopping! Keep moving!  (Cracks whip)

Adult Moses:  (Watching from afar)   This cruelty is wrong! How can they treat people this way?

(Slave Driver 1 drags a Slave into the center of the stage and begins beating her.)

Slave Driver 1:      How many times do I have to tell you?! Told you not to stop, you lazy slave!

Slave:     Please, sir! I’m sorry... Please stop!

Adult Moses: (Enraged)   Stop!   (Looks left and right, making sure no guard is nearby)

I cannot just stand here. I have to help my people!

(Shouts as he steps in)    I said STOP!

(Moses strikes Slave Driver 1, who falls to the ground motionless. The Slave gasps in shock.)

Slave:     You... you killed him!   (Panics and runs offstage)

Adult Moses:     What have I done?! What have I done?!

(The Official whispers urgently to Pharaoh nearby.)

Pharaoh:     What?! Moses attacked an Egyptian official?! Guards, hear my decree: Arrest Moses! Kill him!

Official:       Guards, after him!     (Dramatic chase music plays. Moses flees the stage as the curtain closes.)

Scene 6: The Desert Well | 🎭Moses / Zipporah / Sister / Rude Shepherd / Zip's Lambs (half of G2) / Rudy's Lambs (Half of G2) / Jethro 

(Adult Moses, Zipporah, Sisters, Lambs, Rude Shepherd, Jethro)

(Moses enters, exhausted and wearing torn royal clothes. He crawls toward a well in the desert.)

Adult Moses:    Water... I need water... Just a little farther. (Draws water from the well and drinks eagerly)
Oh, thank goodness... I can rest now. (goes under the tree to rest)

(Zipporah, her sister, and a flock of lambs approach the well.)

Sister:    He is dressed like an Egyptian prince. What is he doing out here in the desert?

Zipporah:    Come along, little lambs, time for some fresh water.
(A Rude Shepherd enters, roughly shoving Zipporah and her sister aside.)

Rude Shepherd:    Move out of the way! My flock drinks first!

Zipporah:    Hey! We were here first!

Rude Shepherd:    Too bad! Might makes right out here in the wilderness! Move!

Adult Moses:    (Standing up tall and speaking in a commanding voice)

Stop right there! She was here before you!   (The Rude Shepherd backs down, intimidated by Moses' commanding presence.)

Rude Shepherd:    (Nervously to his flock)  
Uh... on second thought, maybe you guys aren't thirsty after all! Let's go...  (Hurries offstage)

Adult Moses:    (Smiling gently)   Here, let me help you draw water for your flock.

Zipporah:    (To herself)   Wow... he is so brave and kind...

(Scene shifts to Jethro, the Priest of Midian, standing nearby.)

Jethro:     Daughters, you are back early today! How did that happen?

Zipporah:     An Egyptian traveler defended us from the rude shepherds!

Sister:    He even helped us draw water for all our animals!

Jethro:     Then why did you leave him out there? Go invite him to share a meal with us!

Scene 7:   Welcome to Midian  | 🎭Adult Moses, Zipporah, Sisters (6), Jethro, All the Israelites 

(Adult Moses, Zipporah, Jethro, Sisters)

Adult Moses: (Surprised)   You have seven daughters?!

Jethro:  (Laughs, putting an arm around Moses)   Yes! Seven wonderful daughters! And I could certainly use another strong man around here to help with the livestock. Moses, stay with us, and marry my beautiful daughter Zipporah!   (Zipporah smiles happily. The sisters gather around to celebrate.)

Adult Moses:

Welcome to the world, my son. I will name you Gershom, for I have become a traveler in a foreign land.

Scene 8: Years in the Wilderness | 🎭Adult Moses, Gershom, Time Dancers 

Adult Moses: (Looking up at the sky)

How time flies... I used to be a prince of Egypt. I thought I was meant to do grand things. Now I am just an old shepherd in the desert, forgotten by the world...

Scene 9: The Burning Bush | 🎭 Moses, Burning Tree Dancers, Voice of God

(Moses, Voice of God, Fire Dancers)

Moses:   I need to find fresh grass for the flock. I’ll lead them toward Mount Horeb today.

(Moses walks across the stage. A glowing bush appears. Fire Dancers leap around it.)

Moses:   (Stopping in surprise)   What is that? That bush is on fire, yet the leaves are not burning up! I must step closer to see this miracle.

Voice of God:   Moses! Moses!

Moses:   (Trembling)   Here I am!

Voice of God:    Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground! I am the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

(Moses hides his face, kneeling in reverent fear.)

Voice of God:    I have seen the suffering of My people in Egypt. I have heard their cries, and I have come to rescue them! I will bring them out of slavery into a good land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people, the Israelites, out of Egypt!

Moses:     Lord... who am I to go to Pharaoh? I am just a shepherd. No one will listen to me!

Moses:    Pardon your servant, Lord... I am not a good speaker. Please, send someone else!

Voice of God:    Your brother, Aaron, speaks well! He is already on his way to meet you. You will speak My words to him, and he will speak to the people. Now take your staff in your hand, for you will perform great wonders with it!

Scene 10: The Journey Begins | 🎭Moses, Aaron, Zipporah, Gershom, Eliezer

Gershom:    Goodbye, Grandpa! We’re going to Egypt!

Jethro:    May God protect you all on your journey!

(Aaron walks down the center aisle of the theater and meets Moses on stage. They embrace warmly.)

Aaron:    Moses! My brother!

Moses:    Aaron! It is so good to see you. God has called us to return to Egypt together.

Scene 12: Increased Hardship 🎭 Pharaoh, Slave Drivers, Slaves (Israelites), Moses, Aaron 

(Moses, Aaron, Slave Drivers, Slaves)

(Slave Drivers push the workers even harder.)

Slave Driver 1:  Faster! You lazy workers!

Slave Driver 2:   Because of your Moses, you now have twice as much work to do!

Slave 1:   (Angrily to Moses)   Look at what you’ve done! You made things ten times worse for us!

Slave 2:    Now we have double the work and no straw!

(Throws dirt toward Moses)

(The workers leave bitterly. Moses kneels in prayer.)

Moses:   Lord, why have You brought such trouble upon these people? Is this why You sent me?

Voice of God:     I am the Lord! I will free My people from the heavy burdens of Egypt with an outstretched arm and mighty acts of judgment. You will see what I will do to Pharaoh!

I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt. (7:3) I will bring forth my armies, my people, out of the land of Eygpt by great judgements  And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord

Scene 13: The First Plague – Water to Blood 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Royal Courtiers, Egyptians 

(Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Official, Blood Dancers)

(Pharaoh walks down to the Nile River to enjoy the cool water.)

Moses:    The Lord God of the Hebrews sent me to tell you: "Let My people go!" Because you refused to listen, the Lord will show you His power. When Aaron strikes the Nile with this staff, the waters will turn to blood!

(Aaron strikes the water. Blue ribbons are replaced with red silk as dancers perform.)

Official:    Do not be alarmed, Your Majesty! Our magicians can do the exact same trick!

(Performs a magic illusion)   See? It’s just simple magic!

Pharaoh:     Ha! Your God has no power over me!

(Storms off in anger)

Scene 15: The Third Plague – Lice 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Royal Courtiers, Magicians/Sorcerers 

(Pharaoh, Official, Egyptians, Egyptian Children)

Voice of God:    Moses, tell Aaron to strike the dust of the ground, and it will turn into swarms of lice across all of Egypt!

(Aaron strikes the ground. The Egyptians immediately begin scratching frantically.)

Egyptian Child:    Mommy! My head itch so badly!

Egyptian 1:    It’s everywhere! I can't stop scratching!

Pharaoh: (Scratching furiously)   Magicians! Perform your magic and stop this!

Official: (Scratching)   Your Majesty... we cannot do this! This is not magic... this is the finger of God!

Scene 16: The Fourth Plague – Flies 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Royal Courtiers, Fly Prop Handlers/Dancers 

Scene 17: The Fifth Plague – Livestock 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Egyptian Farmers, Livestock Performers 

(Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Official, Egyptians, Israelites)

Official:

Your Majesty! All our livestock are gone, but not a single animal belonging to the Israelites was harmed! This God is real! We must let them go!

Pharaoh:

Nonsense! They must have poisoned our animals! Work them harder!

Scene 18: The Sixth Plague – Boils 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Royal Courtiers, Egyptians (afflicted) 

(Moses, Pharaoh, Egyptians)

Voice of God:    Moses, take soot from a furnace and toss it into the air before Pharaoh. Festering boils will break out on all the people of Egypt.

(Moses throws soot into the air. The Egyptians groan and reach out in pain as red marks appear.)

Pharaoh:    (In pain)   I hate you, Moses! I will NEVER let your people go!

Scene 19: The Seventh Plague – Hail and Fire 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Royal Courtiers, Storm/Fire Dancers 

(Moses, Pharaoh, Officials, Egyptians, Narrators)

Moses:

Tomorrow at this time, God will send the worst hailstorm Egypt has ever seen! Bring your livestock and workers inside to shelter, or they will perish!

Official:   (Urgently to another Egyptian)   Did you hear that? Everything God says comes true! Quick, bring your family and animals inside!

Narrator 1:    Thunder cracked, and giant hail rained down from the sky!

Narrator 2:    Lightning flashed across the ground, striking everything left in the open fields.

Narrator 3:    Yet in the land of Goshen, where the Israelites lived, not a single hailstone fell.

Pharaoh:   (Panicking)    I have sinned! The Lord is right, and I am wrong! Pray for the storm to stop, and I will let you go!

(Moses prays. The storm stops.)

Pharaoh:   (Looking at the clear sky)   The storm is over! Haha! I changed my mind again. You are not leaving!

Scene 20: The Eighth Plague – Locusts 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Royal Courtiers, Locust Performers 

(Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh, Officials, Narrators)

Aaron:    If you refuse to humble yourself, swarms of locusts will cover the land tomorrow! They will devour every green leaf that survived the hail!

Official:    Your Majesty, please! Can’t you see that Egypt is ruined?! Let the people go!

Pharaoh:    Fine! The men may go worship, but the women and children must stay here!

Moses:    No. We must all go together—young and old, sons and daughters, with all our livestock!

Pharaoh:    Never!   Get out of my sight!    (Moses stretches out his staff. Wind sound effects play.)

Narrator :   An east wind blew across the land all day and all night.

Narrator :    By morning, swarms of locusts covered the ground until it turned black.

Narrator :    They ate every plant, every crop, and every leaf on every tree. Nothing green was left in all of Egypt.

Pharaoh:    Forgive me! Pray to your God to remove these terrible bugs!

(Moses prays. A strong west wind carries the locusts into the Red Sea.)

Pharaoh:    Aha! The locusts are gone! Back to work, everyone!

Scene 21: The Ninth Plague – Total Darkness 🎭 Moses, Pharaoh, Royal Courtiers, Egyptians, Israelites (in light) 

(Moses, Pharaoh, Narrator)

Voice of God:    Moses, stretch out your hand toward the sky, and pitch-black darkness will cover Egypt—a darkness so deep it can be felt!

(The stage lights go completely dark.)

Narrator:    For three whole days, thick darkness covered the land of Egypt. No one could see anyone else, and no one moved. But where the Israelites lived, there was bright light!

Pharaoh:   (Calling out in the dark)    Moses! Take your women and children and go! Just leave your herds behind!

Moses:    Not a single hoof will be left behind! We need our animals to sacrifice to the Lord.

Pharaoh:    Get out of my sight! If I ever see your face again, you will die!

Moses:    Have it your way. You will never see my face again.

Scene 22: The Tenth Plague and the First Passover 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Israelite Families, Angel of Death / Passover Performers 

(Moses, Pharaoh, Israelites, Israelite Child)

(King Pharaoh is sitting on his throne with his son. Moses walks in.) 

Moses:    This is what the Lord says: "At midnight, the firstborn son in every Egyptian home will die, from the palace to the humblest cottage." But God will make a way to protect His people.   (Moses gathers the Israelites together.)

Pharaoh Kelly:    Ha, nonsense, your bluffing is getting better everyday… (scoffs at Moses and leaves the stage with his son.)

Moses:    Listen carefully! Each family must take a spotless lamb and care for it until the fourteenth day. At twilight, sacrifice the lamb. Take its blood and paint it on the top and sides of your doorframes.

(As the recording plays, the Israelites paint their doorframes with blood. Following the recording cues, they put on their sandals, hold their staffs in their hands, tuck their cloaks into their belts, and eat the food while standing up.)

(Recording:  That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 

This is how you are to eat it:  with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand.  Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.

On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt.  I am the Lord.  

The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.  No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.)

Moses:     This is the passover. When the Lord passes through the land, He will see the blood on your doorframes and pass over your home. No harm will come near you.

Scene 23: The mourning Mothers-Pharaoh's Palace 🎭Pharaoh, Mourning Mothers (Dancers/Singers), Royal Courtiers 

Scene 24: Freedom at Last 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Miriam, Pharaoh, All Israelites 

(Pharaoh, Officials, Egyptians, Moses, Aaron, Israelites)

(Mourning music plays. The Egyptians weep as their sons pass away.)

Pharaoh:  (Brokenhearted)   Moses... take your people, take your herds, and leave Egypt at once! Go worship your God... 

Israelite:   We’ve never been paid for our service for the past 400 years, not me, not my parents, nor my grandparents, nor my great grandparents….

Egyptians: (Handing gold, silver, and jewelry to the Israelites)  Please, take these gifts and go quickly!

Egyptians & Israelites:

The God of Israel is Lord of all,

Before His power the kingdoms fall.

He breaks the chains and sets us free,

Praise His name eternally!

(The Israelites march offstage in victory. The curtain briefly closes, then opens on Pharaoh and his guards.)

Pharaoh:

Wait! What have we done?! We just let all our workers go! Ready the chariots! Prepare for battle! We will bring them back!

Scene 25: Crossing the Red Sea 🎭 Moses, Aaron, Miriam, Pharaoh, Egyptian Soldiers/Guards, Sea Dancers, All Israelites (Full Cast Ensemble) 

(Moses, Aaron, Israelites, Blue Water Dancers, Pharaoh)

(The Israelites stand at the edge of the stage. Blue fabric is laid out, representing the Red Sea.)

Israelite 1:     Look! The Red Sea is right in front of us, and there's nowhere to run!

Israelite 2:   Listen! I hear chariots! Pharaoh’s army is coming after us!

Israelite Child:   Did you bring us out here into the desert just to be captured?!

Moses:    Do not be afraid! Stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today! The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still!

Voice of God:    Moses, raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water!

(Moses raises his staff. Blue fabric is lifted high on both sides, creating a path through the water. The Israelites walk safely through the middle.)

(After Israelites cross the ocean, the water closes behind the Israelites.)

(the Egyptian Army pursuing the ISraelites drown)

All Cast:    I will sing to the LORD,
for he has triumphed gloriously;
horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.
The LORD is my strength and my defense;
he has become my salvation.
